Alice Springs is the famous geographical centre of Australia. This town is situated on the Stuart Highway and is a place where the traditional Arrernte Aboriginal owners have lived for about 20000 years. About 29, 000 people live in the town today. Alice Springs is unique insofar as the town is situated seemingly in the 'middle of nowhere’ but for locals it's the centre of everywhere. The location is significant because of the year round natural water supply found here by european explorers and how the town is nestled within the West MacDonnel Ranges where the (normally dry) Todd River has carved a gap in the Ranges.
[Edit] Destination Info
Alice Springs embodies the hardy outback of the Northern Territory's Red Centre, and is a travel hub for sights and hikes in the region, such as Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (formerly known as the Olgas) and Kings Canyon. Water is a scarce commodity in the region, and so restrictions are common.
