[Edit] White Eastern Grey Kangaroos at Bordertown
These are not albino Kangaroos rather they are a result of genetic breeding.
They are white Western Greys. Also in the enclosure at times are Grey and Red Kangaroos, red necked wallabies and Dama wallabies. Not a great is known of the white Kangaroo’s origin. The wildlife sanctuary they are in was developed 1968.
On a family property near the NSW boarder “Joe” a big white kangaroo was captured by a guy named Barry Smith. After chasing the white roo down through mallee scrub on a motor bike, the roo was eventually ran down and captured with a belt. “Joe” was then placed in the wildlife sanctuary at Boarder town. “Joe” the big white had some problems when he arrived. He was a little stressed and his legs needed to be massaged by a local vet and he needed to be kept on a drip until he was feeling better. After a while he went on to become the founding father of the white kangaroo colony that that has grown to become a tourist feature. The first white Joey was born in 1984, followed by a second 2 years later. The breeding program has now taken off.
Sadly, Joe was killed in 1988 when fighting a big male red kangaroo. Over 43 white kangaroos have been bred at the park over time. Lots have been sent to parks and reserves around the country. They are very susceptible to sunburn.
