Historic Bowen, the first settlement in North Queensland, is famous for its tomatoes and mangoes (in season from November until January). It is probably the fruit picking capital of the north coast and during harvest season hundreds of travellers converge on the area to pick, grab and stuff fruit and vegies.
Bowen is home to the Big Mango. The mango It is thought to have originated in India but has been in cultivation for so long that it is hard to tell. In India alone there are over 1,000 varieties in cultivation. It is also extensively grown in all the South Pacific nations including Australia.
In 2007, Bowen was used as a location for the filming for the Hollywood movie 'Australia' which will be released in 2008. The film is set in Darwin in the 1940s but the well preserved street scape of Bowen made it the perfect place for shooting some outdoor scenes.
