Destination Wiki: Bundaberg

Bundaberg is a town you'll get off at if you are interested in rum or want to earn some $$ picking fruit and vegetables.

Bundaberg is a thriving city, dominated by the sugar cane industry, and supported by beef, cattle and dairy, tropical fruit and tomatoes. The 4 sugar mills in town produce nearly 20% of Australia's sugar. It is also a prime location if your looking for some work - fruit picking work is almost guaranteed between the months of Feb-Nov, picking Avocados, Tomatoes, Snow peas and zucchini.

It's also the home of the Bundaberg Rum distillery which you can visit and get a guided tour around.

The name Bundaberg is derived fro traditional Aboriginal words, Bunda meaning 'elder' or perhaps 'local clan', and 'berg' meaning town.

[Edit] Mystery Craters

Just beyond the Botanic Gardens are the fantastic Mystery Craters. These craters have appeared on Ripley's Unsolves Mysteries, as they baffle Geologists as to how they were created. The craters are one of the most interesting attractions because they are so sunstantial, and you wont find anything else like them in Australia.

The 35 craters formed in a massive slab of sandstone, and were discovered beneath a layer of sile and sand by a local farmer in 1971. 27 of the craters are exposed, 8 remaining in their pre-discovered state. These formations date back at least 25million years. Pretty cool eh?
