Opal Mine tour and 'Noodling' for Opals
The Opal mine tour in Coober Pedy enables people to see underground mining and also view the materials and equipment which were used. Europeans first came to this area in 1915 when a young boy stumbled upon an opal (colourful precious stone) on the surface of the otherwise barren ground. Since then there has been an ebb and flow of miners to the area as opal prices have risen and fallen.
You can also try to become rich by fossicking and looking for little pieces of opal in the left over waste rock material. You might find small opals in the rock debris passed over by the commercial miners. This is known as 'Noodling'. Good luck!!!
