This is the largest town in the region of the Great Ocean Road with some 30,000 people. You'll find a large number of hotels/bars here which reflect the older history of the town and it's service of ships and sailors working in the port here. The town is a popular place for whale watching in the winter months.
The area surrounding Warrnambool is known as the 'Shipwreck Coast' for self explanatory reasons. It's been a treacherous coast since Europeans started sailing off the coast in the early 1800s. It was caught up in the hysteria of a feared Russian invasion of the 1880’s and the huge cannon gun emplacements still stand on Flagstaff Hill. Visit the “Naughty Angel” down the main street at the very end.
